Cary keeps Somerset carnival flame alight
Castle Cary and Ansford carnival – on Saturday 16 October – will be the only carnival in the county this year. “Clearly a lot may happen between now and then” said Paul Burch, Society Chair, “and of course we will be following government COVID guidelines to the letter. However, we have been talking to people in the town, and they are really pleased we are planning to go ahead.”
The towns’ Carnival Society are developing plans as the procession will be very different to other years’. “In 2021 carnival is going to be about our community and a celebration of us coming out of the pandemic and looking forward positively to the future.” says Paul. “We look forward to welcoming everyone!”
Currently, the Society is planning onhaving a lantern procession, after a lantern making workshop in the afternoon. They are also delighted to hear that a number of the Carnival Clubs are intending to come along as walking entries, and think there will be a small number of modest floats. Most importantly – carnival spirit is alive and kicking!
“Our fund raising campaign will be critical in determining how many bands and special entries we can afford,” says Jeannie Thanisch, Treasurer. “We know the last 18 months have been really tough for many local businesses, however we are hoping that those that have done well will support us. This procession will be all about our community coming together again.”
Look out for a number of community events – and most importantly, put Saturday 16 October in the diary now! SEE YOU THERE!!
