On The Home Front Was An Evening Of Songs, Skits And Remembrances
Last Friday night, the songs of 1914 – 1918 could be heard in Castle Cary. Castle Cary & Ansford Carnival Society (CCACS) held a carnival fundraising event, titled On The Home Front, in Caryford Community Hall. Led by Bryan Hallett and his talented team of entertainers, in khaki uniform and Coldstream Guard costumes, the evening included songs of the time, balanced with poignant letters and poems from the war years, and comedy skits.
94 Cary and other folk turned out for the event, which included a buffet. The Hall was decked with Union Jack bunting, to add to the flavour of the night. They sang along to favourites such as It’s A Long Way To Tipperary, Run Rabbit Run and There’ll Always Be An England. They also heard readings of contemporaneous letters and poems, to recall the more sombre side of the story of living ‘on the home front’ during the war.
The evening raised over £600 for Cary Carnival funds.
CCACS President Gordon Stockman said: “This was so much better even than I had expected. The turnout was fantastic, and the quality of the entertainment was excellent. Indeed, a number of people came up to me, to say how much they enjoyed it, and how professional Bryan and his team were.” Gordon added: “This addition of over £600 to our funds will help Cary’s carnivals, in this and next year. So I must thank our Committee members, Bryan and his team, and all those who bought tickets, for their support.
