Saturday 16 October … we’re on!!
After the government’s announcement of the ‘route out of lockdown’, the Carnival Society are delighted to say that we intend to go ahead with our towns’ carnival celebrations on Saturday 16 October.
“I’m really excited that we should be in a great place to host a carnival in 2021.” said Society Chair, Paul Burch. “This year will very much be a community effort with the ethos all about encouraging every part of our community to come together – and celebrate that we can!”
Over the coming months, the Society will be working out what sort of carnival we can put on. Clearly the event will have to meet any safety restrictions that exist at that time.
Many of the carnival clubs have been unable to fund raise for a year, and with Glastonbury Festival – a critical source of income for many – being cancelled, 2021 will be financially tough for a lot of clubs. So, the procession looks like being very different … and a lot more local!
“I think a carnival celebrating our towns’ fabulous community spirit – so alive and well during the pandemic – is spot on”, said Treasurer, Jeannie Thanisch. One early idea is to have a lantern procession – which could be magical. And hopefully, money raised through the Co-op’s local fund will bring the Notting Hill carnival club Mahogany, to the Primary School for special costume workshops.
The society will also be kicking off a fund-
raising programme – so watch out for lots of family activities and fun events coming soon!
“We’re so excited to have this to look forward to and plan for.” says Paul. “The town deserves a big celebration – and we’re here to help!”
