What’s happening on carnival night!

On Saturday 16 October at 7pm it’s carnival time in Castle Cary!  As only one of two carnivals going ahead in Somerset this year, the Committee are thrilled with how people in the town, and in the carnival community are getting behind the event.

“It’s so encouraging to hear the enthusiasm of people we speak to.” says Carnival Society Chair, Paul Burch.  “It’s great how many families and local organisations are putting in entries.  Cary is a small town with a big heart!  Everyone is determined to come together, celebrate and look forward to the future.”

Here’s the key information about carnival night

A different route!   This year the procession starts at the junction of Station Road with Victoria Gardens.  From there it will go into the town centre, around the Triangle, up Fore Street and past the Market House before finishing at the junction of High Street and Ansford Road.  “With so many young walking entries, we needed a shorter route.” explains Paul.

The town centre is likely to get busy so, think about watching from near the start of the route, along Station Road.

The town’s first lantern parade. As part of the main carnival procession, the lantern parade will include around 250 children from primary schools including Queen Camel, Wincanton and Castle Cary.  “The children are really excited to be part of the evening procession this year” says Cary Primary School Head, Sarah Martin. “The glue and glitter are already out and the children’s creativity is flowing!”

A festival-like atmosphere around the Market House.  “The local band, A Cunning Plan are playing before the carnival and doing another set after the procession.  The Blackdown Samba band, are also joining in the fun after the procession.” explains Paul, Society Chair.  “With a short awards ceremony, local food and drink traders open for business, we think it will help everyone make the most of our towns’ big night out!”.
